What is Matcha, Anyway?
Let’s start with the basics. WHAT IS MATCHA?
Matcha tea is a powdered green tea from JAPAN. What is so special about that? Well, normally when you drink a tea you drink basically „enhanced water“. Which is good, of course! But when you drink matcha, you actually consume the whole powdered tea leaf. That is why 1 cup of matcha equals approximately 10 cups of regular green tea and why it is so benefitial to human body.

According to a study published in the Journal of Chromatography A, matcha tea has three times more epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) as regular green tea. EGCG is a catechin, or a phytochemical compound that acts as an antioxidant to fight cancer, viruses and heart disease. Matcha is also said to be great for an energy boost. That is probably why you can see matcha latte and other types of matcha tea drinks everywhere. People start to drink it instead of coffee. Matcha gives you the energy for longer time (+/- 4,5 hours), coffee „kicks“ you up really quickly but also goes away just as fast (it reaches its peak after 45 minutes).
In our tea room, we prepare hot or cold matcha tea, but we also offer matcha latte. Why? That is easy. I remember myself when I was young and I sooo wanted to try coffee. Everyone drank it so I wanted too. But when I had it for the first time – I hated it. So I started to drink with milk and sugar. After couple of cups a started to like it (and removed sugar and then milk). Same is with matcha. When someone drinks it for the first time, most of the time people do not like it because they are suprised by its taste but this certainly does not mean that we should add sugar to it! As we want people to drink matcha, we don‘t want to „scare“ them with firts cup, so the better aproach is to put a slice of fresh lemon to the tea.
You can see that people are now turning to more natural and healthy products and that is why matcha is now so popular, even though it is a tradition old more than 800 years!
Thanks to energy boost and metabolism speeding effect matcha is very popular amongst people who are doing sports. Especially yoga! Because yoga and the tea drinking just belongs together.
Why people only drink it prepared in restaurants, caffes and tea rooms? Why not prepare it at home? For this there is really easy answer. Preparation of matcha takes time – that is why it is called „matcha ceremony“. You need to have the tools (bamboo whisk) etc. BUT that is why we are here!
